The importance of training goes far beyond checking off a to-do task for your employees. High-quality, comprehensive training provide employees with the knowledge and skills they need to be effective and safe in their roles.
In the workplace, the issues associated with substance abuse pose significant threats to safety and productivity. Misuse of substances can increase the risk of accidents and injuries, decrease productivity, raise insurance costs, and ultimately reduce profits. If you are an employer, HR professional, or Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) expert, you may feel uncertain about the steps to take upon discovering that an employee is misusing alcohol, drugs, or prescription medications. As a union representative, you may seek assurance that a union member has not been unjustly disciplined or terminated. Additionally, as a lawyer, you may need more detailed information on the matter.

For DOT-regulated employers, supervisor training is mandatory. Designated individuals must be trained a minimum of one hour on controlled substance use and one hour on alcohol misuse. If you are a workplace or non-regulated employer, your company’s alcohol and drug testing policy may require that your supervisors be trained on performance management, unfit-for-duty situations, and testing referrals in certain situations. After completing the DOT drug and alcohol training for supervisors course, you will be able to:
- Explain the different reasons for testing
- List the drugs that are tested for
- Explain the importance of confidentiality in the testing process
- Recognize and document signs and symptoms of impairment from drug abuse and alcohol misuse
- Identify when Post-Accident testing may apply to ensure that employees are fit for duty.
- Determine when Reasonable Cause testing for controlled substances applies
